But the programme is about more than just watching – everyone from Zürich and the surrounding area is invited to play their part, seeing and learning new things and helping to get the City moving in their own way.
Jérôme Bel as special guest
Friday 3 May will see the grand opening of ZÜRICH DANCES with a remake at the Schiffbau of the international success story “The Show Must Go On” by Jérôme Bel, who is one of the most sought-after European choreographers. Back in 2001, he revolutionised the contemporary dance scene with “The Show Must Go On”, and now Dina ed Dik and Peter Vandenbempt have put together a unique Zürich version of this masterpiece. It is of course based on the Jérôme Bel original which represents an important milestone in recent European dance and performance history and has gone on to become a pop hit on international dance stages.
A City on the move
Crash courses will give an insight into a wide variety of dance styles, showcases will be recorded, walks organised through the City and on Saturday evening in Zürich main station concourse, we will see just how Zürich can dance. There will be plenty of other dance-related surprises on offer as well – public squares and benches, parks, streets and cafés will all be dancing, all be moving and all getting everyone involved.
ZÜRICH DANCES is an extension of the “Tanzfest” that has been organised throughout the country since 2006 by reso, the Swiss dance network. The City of Zürich recognised the potential of this event and decided to concentrate on dance as part of its cultural model and within the legislation focus designed to make Zürich a city of culture and creativity. The “Tanzfest” is now set to become a city-wide major event under its new name of ZÜRICH DANCES.
A whole host of partners have come together to make this city-wide dance-fest possible, including Gessnerallee Zürich, Zürich main station, Komplex 457, Ballett Zürich, Perla-Mode, Quartierfabrik VERT.IGO, Rote Fabrik, Schauspielhaus Zürich and Tanzhaus Zürich. A full list can be found at www.zuerichtanzt.ch
ZÜRICH DANCES has been made possible thanks to the support of: The City of Zürich cultural department, ewz, VBZ Züri-Linie, the Canton of Zürich cultural department, the Swiss Federal Department for Culture (BAK), Migros-Kulturprozent, the Ernst Göhner Foundation, Pro Helvetia – Swiss cultural foundation, the Werner H.
