Established in 1961, the Broadcasting Authority is the regulatory body for radio and television broadcasts originating in Malta. It regulates the public service broadcaster as well as all the commercial and community radio and TV stations and licenses all commercial and community stations (radio and TV) except for the public service broadcaster. With its role emanating from the Constitution of Malta, it serves to ensure that TV and radio stations are compliant with their legal and licence obligations. The Broadcasting Authority also handles complaints whenever viewers and listeners feel they are not satisfied with a station’s reply or action. The Broadcasting Authority further monitors programmes and takes action when broadcasters are found to be in breach of legislation. The Authority is also responsible for the operation of the Malta Broadcast Antenna where all national radios have their FM and/or digital transmission equipment. In the near future the Broadcasting Authority will strengthen its role in the audio-visual landscape through the setting up of the BA Academy dedicated to training on legislative, media literacy and professional skills aspects.
