In many respects the two industries have identical objectives: growing an audience, increasing market share, exposing artists to a wider listenership, and maximising revenue streams. Yet the routes to these objectives can often seem mutually exclusive. Airtime is finite, a great deal of content is deemed unsuitable for daytime slots, falling outside of playlist contention, or shunted to ‘specialist’ shows. In many countries, radio is criticised for not airing enough domestic music (Switzerland, the Baltic states) while in others, domestic music quotas are mandated by law (Canada and France). Can labels, stations, advertisers and consumers all get what they want and if so, how can the music and radio industries work toward this goal? more…
